Dear Friends,
I am writing to you this letter as a citizen of the Republic of India wholly pro bono publico.
Common people of our country are by and large not satisfied with the governments which the political parties have provided to our country, especially from the 1990s. It is most sincerely felt that we should explore how best to realize the goals set by our Constitution. I have examined them in the annexed article on ‘Our Constitutional Socialism: its Vectors and Praxis’. This is to initiate a debate for public information. This sort of deliberation is most essential, also because a Writ Petition is under consideration before the Supreme Court challenging the validity of the insertion of ‘Socialism’ in the Preamble to the Constitution of India, and the provisions of Section 29A(5) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 requiring the political parties, seeking registration with the Election Commission, to adhere to the policy of ‘socialism’ as expressed in the Constitution.
It is time now to explore the mission of our Constitution, and to discover common strands in our perspective so that a political outfit may emerge in our Republic committed to our Constitutional Socialism.
I would be delighted if the annexed article succeeds in initiating a discussion how to realize the core objectives of our Constitution. I solicit your comments with permission to draw on them while settling this chapter, and other chapters on my contemplated book,
I would end this letter with a quote from the Mahabharat (my translation from Sanskrit):
Sorrow which we share in common,
It is unwise to shed tears thereon;
It is prudent to find and forge some ways
To diagnose the cause to get rid of the ailment.
