The Cellular jail at Andaman
Stone walls do not a prison make
Nor iron bars a cage;
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for hermitage .
-- Richard Lovelace, To Althea, From Prision
After a failed attempt to escape while being transported
from Marseilles, Savarkar
was tried and sentenced to 50-years imprisonment. He was sent to the Cellular
Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, then known as Kalapani. He spent
more than a decade there suffering the most inhuman cruelties of the British
Raj. As a true revolutionary what was most important for him was his revolutionay
mission to work for our country’s independence. He never bothered
for anything else, including what happened to him and his reputation:
Thou hadst one aim, one business, one desire;
Else wert thou long since number'd with the dead!

Taj Mahal
What an immortal worship of human mortality,
When humans lived in comatose sufferings.
-- Sumitranandan Pant (translated by Shiva Kant Jha)
Where wasteful Time debateth with Decay
To change your day of youth to sullied night;
And all in war with Time for love of you,
As he takes from you, I engraft you new.
